Improv and Audition Techniques
July 9 – 13 | 8:30am to 4pm
Think fast. Trust yourself. Connect. These are the basic principles of improv that we will put to the test as you grow self-confidence, improve public speaking skills, create amazing stories and hone active listening skills. Summer learners will develop their inner comedian while they rehearse with the same improv exercises and techniques that are used by professional troupes around the world. Skills gained during mornings filled with improv will be put into action in the afternoon as performers focus on fine-tuning the art of audition through coaching and practice. Working together to unlock the keys to nailing a great audition, we will discuss what to wear, where to look, the secrets to feeling comfortable, and some insight into just how far a bit of memorization, research and courtesy can take anyone. If you can do this, you can do anything.
Intro to Film Acting and Screenwriting
July 16 – 20 | 8:30am to 4pm
Lights! Camera! Action! Wait, wait, we’re going to need a script, too. Throughout this week filled with acting and writing, summer learners will explore the feeling of being on both sides of a film camera. Coaching and rehearsals on a mock set will highlight the essential tools needed for on-camera performance work, set etiquette, and the basics of camera shots. Summer learners will discover how to stay relaxed and deliver a great performance by capturing the power of connection and character through voice, eye, face, and movement. Beyond nurturing our acting talent, everyone will work as a team to take a screenplay all the way from brainstorming to writing dialogue to the final product of a 10 minute camera ready short. Those learners interested in experiencing what it takes for this exact screenplay to make it to film can sign up for Film Production the following week, when they can come back to learn about production from a professional film instructor.
July 23 – 27 | 8:30am to 4pm
Is there a “magic formula” that makes a story transfer smoothly from screenplay page to big screen? This is the summer program that will use hard work, talent and production know-how to find out. Whether summer learners played a part in writing the 10 minute screenplay to be filmed during the prior week or are jumping in at production, there is plenty of room (and work) on set for everyone. It will take an entire team to be guided through shooting, editing and performing a short film from start to finish, especially when they have complete creative control of the entire process. From screenwriting to directing, summer learners will explore the art of filmmaking from start to finish and can seize this opportunity to focus on the area that draws them in most.
Commercial Acting and Scene Work
July 29 – August 3 | 8:30am to 4pm
Have you ever wondered what the process is for filming a commercial? Well, you’re about to find out. Using real commercial copy and Program Experts who have on-set experience, summer learners will gain a deeper respect and appreciation for the craft of acting while they explore the essential elements needed for developing a character. During this exciting week, actors will work on scenes from published plays to learn about breaking down a scene, beats, and objectives. Summer learners will develop as an artist and enhance their natural talents by delving into a short study using multiple acting techniques such as Meisner and Stanislavski, all the while focusing on voice, movement, and presence. With both group and individual rehearsal and coaching, this acting masterclass is a must-do for any budding performer this summer.
But having a really good understanding of history, literature, psychology, sciences – is very, very important to actually being able to make movies.
