In the Design Studio
The animation studio awaits your ideas and inspirations, so bring your sketchbook and embark on a journey as you imagine and design characters, create illustrations ready for publishing, experiment with words and pictures through journalism and bring ideas to life through design and 3D printing. Inspire others with imaginative and moving creative stories and capture ideas by cartooning, designing and programming. Find a seat at the drafting table and let’s get started.
Participants in our Design Studio programs will have exclusive access to the Cary Academy Art and Design Studio spaces as they spend their week with skilled, schooled and passionate artists and programmers who enjoy utilizing their talents to encourage and cultivate the talents of learners of all ability levels. Working in a collaborative creative environment, summer learners are encouraged to develop their individual style by digging to discover exactly what inspires them. Some programs on the design discovery path will field trip through the Triangle to observe, experience and discuss the art and design that is all around us.

Cartoon Creation and Illustration
JULY 9 – 13 | 8:30AM TO 4PM
What do the Minions, Avengers, and Monsters Inc. characters have in common? They all started as a circle. Cartooning is the art of capturing a complex view of the energy and details of life and simplifying it all on paper with basic and simple shapes. This fun week in the Design Studio will give summer learners a chance to discover just how design happens. Starting with a circle, artists will practice how to draw many of their favorite animated cartoon and movie characters by using step by step instruction based on cartooning fundamentals. With an understanding of composition, angles, shading, backgrounds and proportion, budding cartoonists will quickly learn the secrets that make drawings come alive. Working together, the group will create full color comic books, fully developing characters from scratch and storyboarding the visions of each character. All summer learners will end the week with a take home portfolio filled with drawings of unique characters soaked in attitude and expression and their own full-color personal comic book. Learn the artist’s secrets that make drawings come alive!
July 16 – 20 | 8:30am to 4pm
If a picture says a thousand words, then visual journalism speaks volumes. By using proven design theory and practices, summer learners will harness the power of a picture to add context to words, stir up a feeling, or communicate important information. Through the creation and keeping of a personal sketchbook, summer learner will develop their skills of visual expression to transfer moments of time to paper as they document the observations, experiences and moments close to them. Relying less on words and more on background, texture, sketching, collage and doodling, learners are invited into the interactive, creative, attention- getting world of visual storytelling. With a solid base of guidance and practice, writers will be given a choice between further developing a documentary-style scrapbook or using inspiration to bring a short story to life by using both written and visual elements. Can you grab the reader’s attention, draw them in and hold their interest? If you can picture it, you can.
Get Published! Illustrator
July 23 – 27 | 8:30am to 4pm
Imagine yourself as a published illustrator, representing written words or ideas through images that you have imagined and produced yourself. Working from concept to final product, using the powerful talent of illustrating to create art that can speak for something or someone else takes time, practice and guidance to refine. During this exciting week in the Studio, aspiring artists will have plentiful opportunities to formalize their illustration skills by utilizing a variety of mediums and focusing on the artistic details needed to develop sharp visual concepts that truly communicate. This summer program, the only one of its kind in the Triangle area, gives artists the unique experience of learning about illustration both as an art form and a business. Summer learners will put their natural artistic ability to the test by working as part collaborative team that, together, will walk through just what it means to bring someone else’s vision to life. This program makes the dream of being a published illustrator a real possibility by having learners create artwork for real assignment that have the potential of print publication in local, regional and national publications. This particular week provides an especially ideal environment for high school artists to create pieces that can either start or build their portfolio.

Through songs, poems, scripts and plays, writers will quickly discover that expression through the art of writing creatively brings with it endless doors of possibilities.
Bring Your Ideas to Life with Coding, CAD and 3D Printing
July 23 – 27 | 8:30am to 4pm
Imagine taking a thought and making it a reality through development and design. Be there as we work on this essential 21st century skill and embark on a week of bringing ideas to life and developing the computer design abilities necessary in fun and creative way. Through programming and computer-aided design, summer learners will develop computational thinking, logic, critical thinking and problem solving while being creative as they turn their ideas into reality. From design to 3D printing, Tinkercad will be used as the beginner CAD program and Fusion 360 will be used for the more advanced. As the group learns about coding, beginners will use Code Monkey and transition in to Scratch as their experiences grow deeper. Since learning is best when its shared, designers will have the opportunity to learn at their own pace with some online instruction or work collaboratively with other young designers. By the end of the week, you will have the know-how and confidence needed to take your designs and turn them into 3D prints, online stories, games, or animations. This program is suitable for beginners to advanced.
You can't depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.
